Thanks so much to everyone who helped make MPC’s D Eventing Rally such a big success—Tracie, Jen, the volunteers, the stable managers, our HM judges Caitlin and Raimie, C advisors, ponies, etc, etc.
Here are the team and individual scores. Please keep in mind that getting from individual to team scoring occasionally involves dropping some riding scores and adding some ghost HM scores (possibly a simple mistake or two, though I hope not).
Congratulations to all of our riders, who did themselves, their Clubs and their parents proud. Regardless of your final scoring, each of you demonstrated a lot of independence, confidence, poise, determination, teamwork and riding ability. You all are well on your way to becoming horsemen (or horse people or something like that). Parents, of course, contributed a lot when needed, but mostly supported their kids from a distance. There is a great pleasure, and a certain wistfulness (and occasionally anxiety), in watching your child struggle a little to do his/her job, and then succeed at it.
A few comments on the scores:
A special mention is due to Grainne, Ruth, Emily, Caity and Meghan for their perfect scores on the written test (also Lizzie on the Sr D test). If you are curious, the questions that seemed to cause the most difficulty were the following: (3) (Male hounds are dog hounds) (8) (Fence height for D2 is 18 inches). As you might have guessed, every written test at an MPC-sponsored rally will have at least one foxhunting question.
A second special mention is for Catherine and Justine, who each had zero HM penalties. If you take a look at the individual scores, you can get a pretty good sense of the relative weighting of the various components to the final score. As you would expect, Dressage is very important to the final result, as is XC if there is a refusal. HM and written test generally contribute less to the final score (like, say, a downed rail in stadium), but they can make a significant difference in the final standings with just a small addition. As you can see, riding is very important to the final score, but HM and written test can make a difference.
Cassie Sanger had the lowest overall score this year (as she did last year). Cassie, Hannah and Ruth (supported by Nina) rode Lakeville to the front the pack for the second straight year.
Those of you who thought that the stadium and XC courses rode very easily, and are looking for a little more of a challenge, should definitely consider participating in the NY/UC Regional Eventing rally on Sunday, June 28, at the Kent School. It will be a lot bigger, more formal and more exciting.
Megan, We all hope that your leg is feeling better soon. Getting kicked is no fun, and ponies aren’t very good at apologizing. You showed a lot of inner strength.
Best to all, and again many thanks to all those who chipped in so willingly.
Happy trails!
PS, Parents, I will spare you the indignities of listing your individual scores (no, they weren’t that bad, but no one succeeded in beating your child (which I suppose is to be expected).
The reason I asked you to take the written test was two-fold—first it should help show you what the kids are learning, and second, it was meant to show that learning can be fun.
Thanks for participating!!
